Sound modules (also known as romplers) can be pretty useful tools, especially if they come bundled with a collection of decent quality samples. We all love being all creative with our synths and samplers of course, but a rompler instrument loaded with different ready-to-use sounds can be a life saver during those uninspired days which we all tend to have from time to time.
So, until you have enough money to buy yourself a full-featured commercial sound module, try using one of these freeware alternatives instead.

If you’re into classic 90s sounds, don’t make sure you check out the good old Proteus VX. It’s a bit cumbersome to use, but the sounds which come with it (taken from the Proteus 2000 hardware sound module) are definitely worth the effort.
Kontakt Player, SampleTank Free and Independence Free are a safe bet if you need some classic bread & butter sounds. All three come with more than decent factory libraries, packed with all sorts of different sounds – from electric pianos and bass guitars to orchestral instruments and synthesizer pads.
